Lisbon

An engineering campus on the city grid

Instituto Superior Técnico sits at Alameda, close enough to the airport for a short metro ride and close enough to the centre for an evening walk.

Venue and travel

01

The venue

The conference took place in the congress centre of Instituto Superior Técnico, in the Civil Engineering building on the Alameda campus, on floors 01 and 02.

Address: Av. Rovisco Pais 1, Lisboa, Portugal.

The congress centre is part of a working engineering school, not a hotel conference wing.

Getting there

Lisbon airport is close to the city. The published guide gave three practical routes; journey times below are the figures recorded for the 2023 edition and will vary with traffic.

Underground from the airport

Take the metro from the airport and leave at Saldanha. The journey is about 15 minutes. From Saldanha, the Alameda campus is a short walk.

Bus from the airport

Carris routes 744 and 783 stop near the arrivals side of the airport. Leave at Saldanha and walk to the campus. The published journey time was about 20 minutes.

Taxi or ride service

A taxi from the airport to Alameda takes about 10 minutes outside peak traffic. The published guide suggested taking it from the departures level, where the queue is usually shorter.

Arriving by train

Lisbon's main rail stations connect to the metro network. From Gare do Oriente or Santa Apolónia, continue by underground to Saldanha and walk to the campus.

Current routes, fares and service changes should be checked with the operators before travelling. Their sites are listed in the reference shelf below.

Where to stay

The source edition listed hotel and hostel options in central Lisbon, but the names and contact details were incomplete in the published page. This archive does not fill those gaps with guesses.

What can be said without inventing anything is where the practical choices lie:

  • Saldanha and Alameda

The shortest walk to the venue. Good for anyone who wants to arrive on foot and keep the day simple.

  • Avenida da República

A broad avenue with metro access, between Saldanha and the city centre. A practical middle distance.

  • Baixa and Chiado

The historic centre. More restaurants and evening activity, with a longer commute to the campus.

  • Near the river

Alfama, Mouraria and the waterfront suit a longer stay, but the hills make the daily trip less convenient.

Booking advice. Choose a place within walking distance of a metro station on the red or yellow line and confirm the cancellation terms before paying.
04

Using the city

Lisbon rewards walking, but the hills are real. A short metro ride can save a long climb, and the network connects the airport, Saldanha, the central stations and the riverside.

The campus is in a busy part of the city, with cafes and small restaurants around Alameda and Saldanha. The edition took place in October; check the forecast before travelling.

The conference record does not include a social programme or a list of organised tours. Visitors should treat the city information here as practical orientation, not as an itinerary.
